Over the last few weeks, the Trump Administration has been escalating attacks on non-citizen students and academic workers across the US—and we should be prepared for these threats to impact our WCM community.
Our union has set up a UAW Immigration Hotline with a team of lawyers to quickly connect members facing an immigration emergency with legal resources. In the event that you or a coworker are experiencing an unexpected change in immigration status or any other immigration-related emergency, call this number: 888-416-2110.
As part of negotiating our first union contract, we have also reached a tentative agreement on International Researcher Rights, including up to $1,500 in reimbursement for visa renewal related expenses and expanded visa choice. However, WCM has also continued to refuse other protections for members of our community who are on visas, including time off for visa renewal processes and protection against unfair termination at the start of our appointments. Also, we will not accept WCM’s continued efforts to retain the power to unilaterally change our contract, which would disproportionately impact international workers, who were already more precarious before the current Presidential administration.
